‘Abnormally mild’ weather ahead for Portland after cloudy Sunday

Sunday clouds over Portland should part on Monday, ushering in an unusually sunny and warm week. Portlanders can expect sun most days and high temperatures in the low or mid-50s. Sunday’s high will be around 52 degrees.

A strong high pressure system over the Pacific Northwest is driving the “prolonged stretch of dry weather with abnormally mild temperatures and light winds,” the National Weather Service says. Forecasters expect a full week without significant rain.

Though the temperatures will be ideal for getting outside, stagnant air could lead to worsening air quality and pose a risk for people with respiratory problems as air pollutants get trapped close to the ground, the weather service says. The Portland area and I-5 corridor from Battle Ground to Eugene are under an air stagnation advisory until 4 p.m. Friday.

Meanwhile, the Oregon Coast remains on sneaker wave watch through Monday afternoon.

Beachgoers should stay out of the water to avoid dangerous swimming conditions, the weather service says, and watch for sneaker waves that can rush far up the shore and potentially pull people into the ocean.
