Houston Texans at Pittsburgh Steelers preview
A top-notch defence makes the Houston Texans worthy favourites to win the final match of wildcard weekend – and it is also why we could be in for a low-scoring end to the first week of playoff action in the NFL.
The Texans conceded the second-fewest points in the regular season and a total points line of 38.5 points may not be surpassed at the Acrisure Stadium.
The Steelers’ defence hasn’t quite reached its usual high standards this season but their key players came up trumps in the big moments of last week’s crucial showdown with the Baltimore Ravens. Cameron Heyward stifled the threat of Derrick Henry on the ground as well as getting in the face of Ravens QB Lamar Jackson.
Pittsburgh’s secondary is a weak link but their front seven remains one of the best around and they are unlikely to give away too much in such a high-stakes contest.
The Steelers’ offence, however, look likely to struggle against one of the league’s most impressive defences so their veteran playmaker Aaron Rodgers can expect a tough night against the Texans.
Houston lead the NFL in pressures and are in the top three for takeaways and turnover margin.
The strong arm and playoff experience of Rodgers will give Steelers hope, but both defences look set up for success and points should be hard to come by in forecast freezing conditions in Pittsburgh.
Banking on no more than 38 points being scored could pay dividends.
