Texans backup Davis Mills didn’t travel with team for personal reasons, but on his way to Pittsburgh for playoff game

PITTSBURGH – Texans backup quarterback Davis Mills didn’t travel with the team due to personal reasons Sunday for their road trip to Pittsburgh for an AFC wild-card round playoff game.

Mills is joining the team and flying to Pittsburgh independently in advance of a Monday night game against the Steelers, per sources.

Mills and his wife recently posted on social media about the birth of a boy, the couple’s first child. The team allowed Mills to spend more time with his family by having him travel on his own to Pennsylvania.

“Our boy is here,” the couple posted on Instagram about Maximus Steven Mills, who was born on Jan. 5.

Mills did practice all week, following the birth of his son.

He was officially listed as questionable.

Mills is 3-0 this season, throwing five touchdowns with one interception, when he started three games while starter C.J. Stroud was recovering from a concussion. If Mills doesn’t make the trip, then rookie Graham Mertz would back up Stroud against the Steelers.

The Texans officially ruled out reserve cornerback Ajani Carter, the North Shore graduate who has been designated for return and not activated from injured reserve. Carter didn’t make the trip to Pittsburgh.
