‘I want to retire with the most Super Bowls’

FRISCO, Texas — The pursuit for the ever-elusive sixth franchise Super Bowl is on hold for at least one more year, as the Dallas Cowboys enter yet another offseason in which they’ll need to sort through the disappointment of a losing season, extending their championship drought to three decades.

There hasn’t been a shiny new Lombardi handed to the Cowboys since the 1995-96 season, but that’s something owner and general manager says he’s working hard on changing, hence the decision to part ways with defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus — marking the fourth change in that role in as many seasons to try and find the right man for the job.

And, in his own words, Jones isn’t interested in retiring as general manager as the Cowboys fight to end their absence from the top of the NFL mountain.

“I’m going to have to say this to everybody in this room: I don’t know what your ages are, but I hope — let’s just say [Stephen Jones’] age — if he has as much fun between where he is today and where I am today in age, if he has as much fun as the guy sitting here beside him, he’s in for a hell of a ride and a hell of a life,” said Jones. “I’ve had the most fun in the last 20, 21 years.”

In other words, Jones will continue to chug forward, and has no plans on stepping down until he achieves one goal in particular, and it’s not simply getting the aforementioned sixth ring.

“Everybody likes to dream, and I promise you high and hard on my dream list, way ahead of making a buck, because I don’t need a buck — way ahead of that is to go down as the owner that won the most Super Bowls.”

As it stands, only two organizations have more Super Bowl rings than do the Cowboys, namely, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots, both having six and, at the time this article goes to print, both are currently in the hunt to try and land their seventh; with the Patriots having advanced past the Los Angeles Chargers in the first round of the playoffs while the Steelers try to do the same against the Houston Texans.

For owners, specifically, Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft currently has all six of his organization’s, while Jones owns only three.

Thus, needing three to tie and four to surpass the New England maestro, to achieve Jones’ goal the Cowboys must create another dynasty, and beginning in 2026, before time runs out on Dak Prescott’s prime years and another organizational reset is required.
