This week, Chicago P.D. turns its attention to the show’s underappreciated MVP for a long overdue Sergeant Trudy Platt showcase.
In Wednesday’s episode, titled “Heroes,” the veteran officer “finds herself challenged when a simple favor for a former recruit spirals into something far more devastating,” reads the official synopsis. It’s a storyline that “we’ve been wanting to do for quite a few years,” showrunner Gwen Sigan tells Soaps.com. “I’m excited that we are going to tackle it this season.”
What starts out as a professional matter, when a case from Platt’s past comes back to haunt her, “ends up becoming very personal. The people involved become very personal to her,” Sigan previews. In the promo for the installment, Platt discovers the body of a dead officer whom she knew, and she is convinced that his death was staged to look like a suicide when it was actually murder.
Although the subject matter is very heavy, Sigan calls the hour “beautiful.” “It turned out really great. Amy [Morton] just killed it. It’s a very emotional episode,” Sigan says. “I think it shows a lot about Platt’s character and sort of how she functions in a pretty tragic situation.”
Platt’s crisis also allows for plenty of scenes between her and Burgess, whose dynamic is turned on its head. “It’s unique, because we’re so used to seeing Platt be the mentor and be the one with all the answers, and this episode really shakes her up,” Sigan shares. “And so, we get to see [Burgess] stepping in in a different way, and seeing her friend and her mentor in a different light, and how she can support her.”
Chicago P.D. airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
