‘Immediately stop using’: Health Canada shares nationwide recall for soap due to a chemical hazard

Health Canada published a Canada-wide recall Wednesday for soaps from an Ontario company, due to a chemical hazard issue regarding a high concentration of methyl eugenol.
According to the recall notice, Lake on the Woods Sunrise Soap Co. company reported that around 400 units of its “Shades of Grey” bar of soap were sold in Canada between January 2019 and January 2026.
The affected products, which are manufactured in Kenora, Ont., include 16 g, 67 g and 135 g bars of soap.
“Methyl eugenol is prohibited as a pure ingredient on the Hotlist due to its potential for carcinogenicity but is permitted as a naturally occurring component in botanical extracts with specific limits depending on the product type,” the notice read.
However, as of Jan. 7, there have been no reports of incidents or injuries reported, the notice said.
“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled products, dispose of them and contact Lake of the Woods Sunrise Soap Co. for a replacement,” they added.
Consumers can reach Lake of the Woods Sunrise Soap Co. by email at [email protected] for more information.
In addition, Health Canada has advised consumers to report any health or safety incidents related to the use of this product or any other consumer product or cosmetic by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form.
