Disastrous poll for Trump shows White House return is a ‘failure’: Americans say he’s ‘gone too far’

President Donald Trump’s second term has been a debacle, according to a damning new CNN poll released Friday.

A majority of Americans polled in the survey — 58% — characterized Trump’s first year of his second term as a “failure,” according to the poll.

Just 42% of respondents said Trump’s second term has been a success.

There were virtually no silver linings for the president in the survey.

A plurality of respondents said Trump “made things worse” on several issues he outlined in his inauguration speech, while a lion’s share of those polled said the president has “gone too far” in exercising his power in numerous areas.

More respondents than not said Trump “made things worse” on:

  • Restoring safety to the United States (39% to 35% who said he made progress)
  • Bringing law and order back to our cities (42% to 33%)
  • Bringing back free speech to America (41% to 27%)
  • Keeping our children safe, healthy and disease free (40% to 26%)
  • Being a peacemaker and unifier (47% to 25%)
  • Stopping the weaponization of the Justice Department (41% to 21%)

Majorities of respondents said Trump went to far making changes to cultural institutions (62%), using the power of the presidency and the executive branch (58%), cutting federal government programs (57%) and changing the way the United States government works (51%.)

An overwhelming majority — 64% — said Trump hasn’t gone far enough trying to reduce the price of everyday goods, while 10% said he has gone too far and 26% said his approach has been about right.

The poll recorded Trump’s approval rating at 39%, with the president struggling to win over independents, who support him at only a 29% clip.

He has virtually no support from Democrats while 9 in 10 Republicans back Trump.
