Pokémon shop robbed of $100,000 in merchandise by armed burglars in Manhattan

MEATPACKING DISTRICT, Manhattan (WABC) — An investigation is underway following an armed robbery at a Pokémon shop in Manhattan on Wednesday night.

NYPD officials say officers responded to a 911 call for three males wearing masks robbing the Poké Court at 412 W. 13th St. in the Meatpacking District.

An employee told Eyewitness News that over $100,000 worth of merchandise was stolen from the store.

They said the three suspects, who were wearing anime backpacks, kept everyone in the store while the robbery occurred, and were armed with a gun and hammers.

The store opened last November and was packed with more than 40 customers for its first-ever community event when the robbers stormed in.

The employee said the robbery happened in just three minutes.

The shop sells Pokémon cards and card accessories, as well as Pokémon-inspired lifestyle goods and curated artist creations.

Owner Courtney Chin spoke out Thursday and said she has a very detailed inventory of what was stolen and hopes it will be covered by insurance.

Chin said the store has alarms and she will be following up with her security company to see if they actually worked.

She said they are now thinking about getting an armed guard.

“That’s been the recommendation of the police and of other shops in the area to get an armed guard or like a doorman,” she said.

Chin said it’s not even about the money — she wanted to create a safe place to enjoy a hobby and not have 40 customers held at gunpoint.

In the last week, similar robberies have occurred in Boston, Los Angeles and Seattle.
