Matt LaFleur, Packers agree to multiyear contract extension

The way Green Bay’s season ended raised some questions about whether new CEO Ed Policy would remain steadfast in his relationship with LaFleur. The Packers squandered a 21-3 halftime lead in the Wild Card Round, falling 31-27 to rival Chicago. Green Bay had been 115-1 since 2000 when leading by 18-plus points in a game, including playoffs.

Lost leads characterized LaFleur’s seventh season in Green Bay. The Packers became the first team since the 1970 merger to lose three tilts when leading by 10-plus points in the final five minutes of the game, including playoffs — Week 3 to Cleveland, Week 16 and Wild Card Round to Chicago.

An injury-ravaged squad, which included losing star Micah Parsons for the season to a torn ACL in Week 15, the Packers ended their 2025 campaign with five straight losses.

Despite the dismal end, Policy and the Packers will let LaFleur coach his way out of the disappointment.

Green Bay has a 76-40-1 record with LaFleur at the helm and has made the postseason in six of seven seasons. The Packers have not reached the Super Bowl under the coach and haven’t been to the NFC Championship Game since 2020, his second season in charge. LaFleur owns a 3-6 playoff record with back-to-back one-and-done campaigns. In the past four seasons, the Packers have gone 37-30-1 in the regular season and 1-3 in the playoffs.

The latest playoff debacle didn’t change Green Bay’s resolve to lock LaFleur down long-term. The 46-year-old would have been a top candidate for other open jobs had the Packers moved on. Those teams must look elsewhere now.
