Grookey has been unleashing adorable mayhem in Pokémon GO since September 2024, and now it’s set to make its Pokémon GO Community Day debut on January 18, 2026, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. local time. During this time Grookey will appear more frequently in the wild, and fortunate Trainers might encounter a Shiny Grookey or Grookey with a Special Background.
Evolve Thwackey (Grookey’s Evolution) before 9:00 p.m. on the day of the event to get a Rillaboom that knows the Charged Attack Frenzy Plant. Starting with this event, Rillaboom will be able to learn the Charged Attack Drum Beating!
It shouldn’t be difficult to drum up excitement for these January 2026 Community Day event bonuses.

Grookey will have a very high chance of appearing at PokéStops with active Lure Modules, and these Grookey will have an increased chance of being Shiny and having a Special Background (from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m.)
Pokémon GO’s January Community Day features both Field Research and Community Day Special Research. Field Research involves catching Grookey to earn rewards including Stardust, Ultra Balls, additional encounters with Grookey, and more. Some of the Grookey in these encounters may have a Special Background. Tickets for Community Day Special Research are US$1.99 (or the equivalent pricing tier in your local currency). Trainers who complete this research will earn three encounters with Grookey with a Special Background, one Premium Battle Pass, one Rare Candy XL, additional encounters with Grookey, and more.
