Reports: Bills fire head coach Sean McDermott after nine seasons

Head coach Sean McDermott has been fired after nine years with the franchise, according to multiple reports on Monday.

McDermott led the Bills to five straight AFC East titles, but following Saturday’s playoff loss to the Denver Broncos, Buffalo has decided to move on.

Despite letting McDermott go, Bills general manager Brandon Beane will remain with the franchise and help find a new coach, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The Bills have had multiple successful regular seasons under McDermott — eight out of nine years and seven straight — but were never able to reach a Super Bowl. Buffalo got as far as the AFC Championship game twice during his tenure, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs on both occasions.

McDermott was 98-50 in the regular season with the Bills, but just 8-8 in the playoffs.

The 51-year-old is the latest long-tenured coach to lose their job this season; the Pittsburgh Steelers fired Mike Tomlin after 19 years at the helm, while the Baltimore Ravens let go of John Harbaugh earlier this month following 18 seasons.
