Russell Wilson makes stance on Sam Darnold crystal clear after Seahawks playoff win

Russell Wilson’s playing career might be coming to a close, but the Seattle Seahawks icon is still feeling free to comment on his original team. He should. Commentary is likely where Wilson is headed, and that’s not a bad thing.

His latest bon mot came after the Seahawks destroyed the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round on Saturday night. Wilson was clearly watching the game and saw where everyone else saw: Seattle is a very good football team, with the potential to win the Super Bowl.

Wilson also likes a specific part of Seattle’s narrative this season, one he probably hopes happens for him as well. After all, he almost accidentally forced his way out of playing the Seahawks, and then was a disappointment at his next three stops. Might he be capable of a redemption arc?

Russell Wilson makes clear how he feels about the Seattle Seahawks and Sam Darnold

The same kind that Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold has had? The difference is that Darnold is nine years younger than RW3 and has many more years left to play. Wilson appears to be taking the classy way of praising a position that he might still have had if he not tried to get general manager John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll fired, though.

The quarterback tweeted after the Seahawks beatdown of the 49ers, “Last Night’s game… shows how LEGIT this Seahawks Team is… and I Love Sam Darnold’s comeback story!”

Last Night’s game… shows how LEGIT this @Seahawks Team is… and I Love Sam Darnold’s comeback story! 🙌🏾

Weird punctuation and capitalization aside, the sentiment is the correct one. Head coach Mike Macdonald’s defense appears capable of at least slowing down the best of offenses. San Francisco had a banged-up group, but Kyle Shanahan is a master of creating a game plan that gives defenses fits. Not the Seahawks.

12s can all agree with Wilson’s point about Sam Darnold having a comeback story from how he performed in his previous seasons, especially at the end of last year. Darnold needs to keep proving he is the quarterback to lead the Seattle Seahawks on a Super Bowl run and remain the QB of the future.

If he leads his team to a championship, he most definitely will stay QB1. If he has a meltdown and proves all his detractors correct by turning the ball over a lot in either the NFC Championship game or the Super Bowl, questions about his ability to win big games will remain.

Next up for the Seahawks and Darnold is the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship game. LA and Seattle split their two regular season games. One can be sure that Russell Wilson will be watching to see what happens in the third matchup.
