What is the wind chill?

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – You have most likely been hearing us talk a lot about wind chills and feels-like temperatures as we make it through this blast of cold weather. Maybe you are wondering what a wind chill is. Let’s talk about it!

Our bodies lose heat through a process called convection, that is when heat moves from an area where it’s warmer to an area that’s colder.

When the temperatures are cold outside and there is little to no wind, a layer of heat remains around our bodies to help us stay warmer for longer. The air temperature will be 20 degrees and it will feel like 20 degrees.

How does the wind chill work?(Audrey Pentecost)

When it is windy outside, the moving air will break up the warm layer that keeps us warm a little longer. This will speed up heat loss and make you feel much colder much quicker. The air temperatures could be 20 degrees, but with a wind speed of 20 miles per hour, it could feel more like 4 degrees.

Remember to dress in warm layers with gloves and a hat when wind chills are low.
