Snowstorm set to hit the Philadelphia region the weekend of January 24th and 25th, with the potential for icy mix

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — It’s looking more likely that there will be a significant snowstorm in the Philadelphia region this weekend, and now it appears we may have an icy mix as well.

Latest track and timing of snowstorm in the Philadelphia region

A system will be moving toward the East Coast from the southwest, and snow looks to arrive late Saturday night.

The latest models show the storm moving north, which means some parts of the area may see an icy mix.

Any such mixing will impact snowfall totals.

While it’s still too soon to predict exactly how much snow we’ll see, a heavy snow event is looking likely.

The snow is expected to last throughout the day Sunday and perhaps even into early Monday.

We will continue to monitor this system over the next few days to see how it develops.

Either way, it will be a brutally cold weekend with highs in the teens to near 20.

Timing of potential weekend snowstorm in the Philadelphia region

Because the system is still several days away, it’s still unknown exactly when it will hit, but models are starting to show snow arriving overnight Saturday into early Sunday morning.

The cold weather will continue into the following week, leaving little chance for any snow we get this weekend to melt.

‘Catastrophic’ ice storm possible from Texas to the Carolinas

The storm could coat roads, trees and power lines with devastating ice across a wide expanse of the South.

The storm arriving late this week and into the weekend is shaping up to be a “widespread potentially catastrophic event from Texas to the Carolinas,” said Ryan Maue, a former chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

“I don’t know how people are going to deal with it,” he said.

Forecasters warned that the ice could weigh down trees and power lines, triggering widespread outages.

“If you get a half of an inch of ice – or heaven forbid an inch of ice – that could be catastrophic,” said Keith Avery, CEO of the Newberry Electric Cooperative in South Carolina.

People in Philadelphia region stock up on snow supplies

With heavy snow in the forecast, people are heading to the stores to get supplies.

That includes Killian’s Hardware in Chestnut Hill.

“They are stocking up on ice, melting compounds, and shovels, and sleds,” said shop owner Russell Goudy.

Shops that sell snow supplies were getting busier Wednesday ahead of a weekend snowstorm in the Philadelphia region.

He said his inventory on Wednesday is probably as good as it will be for the rest of the week.

“We just got a big delivery in this morning. We expect, though, that it probably is going to sell out within the next day or two,” Goudy said.

So, if you need ice-melting material, you would be wise to make a move sooner rather than later.

Especially if you are a conscientious pet owner.

“We are trying to sell more pet-friendly ice melters, but they’re getting harder to get now,” Goudy said. “So, you might have to revert to the old rock salt.”
