Syracuse forces TO with 12:17 left

Syracuse forces Virginia Tech to call a timeout with 12:17 left in the first half, leading 20-13. A Tyler Betsey 3-pointer in transition has Virginia Tech’s coaches heated on the sideline. You’d expect he was very much in the scouting report.

JJ Starling has picked up his second foul, trying to defend Virginia Tech’s Neoklis Avdalas. The second comes with 14:06 remaining. Tyler Betsey comes in to replace him.

Virginia Tech getting shots inside

The score is tied at 10 with 15:40 left in the first half but it feels like Syracuse is hanging around more than anything else.

The Hokies have 10 points in the paint. Virginia Tech guard Neoklis Avdalas is methodically getting to his sports.

Syracuse’s Nate Kingz has five points to lead the Orange, carrying over his strong play from Boston College.

Hokies are shooting 62.5 percent while the Orange are shooting 50 percent, including 2-for-3 on 3-pointers. Virginia Tech offense feels more sustainable to me.

Syracuse starting lineups: Donnie Freeman, JJ Starling, Nate Kingz, Naithan George and William Kyle III

Virginia Tech starters: Jailen Bedford, Ben Hammond, Amani Hansberry, Neoklis Avdalas and Christian Gurdak

The Syracuse men’s basketball team needs to rebound from a crushing loss to Boston College last weekend that halted the team’s momentum since the return of star Donnie Freeman.

Freeman is averaging 22.2 points and 9 rebounds in five games since returning from a foot injury. The Orange is 3-2 since his return although most of those games have been played against the bottom half of the ACC..

Syracuse is 12-6 (3-2 ACC). The Hokies are 14-5 (3-3 ACC).

Virginia Tech is currently listed by ESPN’s Joe Lunardi as the last team out of his projected NCAA Tournament bracket. Syracuse needs to deliver a stretch of good results just to join that conversation.

The Hokies are led by 6-foot-8 forward Amani Hansberry. A transfer from West Virginia (and previously Illinois), Hansberry averages 15.8 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists.

Hansberry has functioned as a center for the Hokies for most of the year, but Virginia Tech is working to re-integrate center Tobi Lowal, who returned from a foot injury four games ago.

The home team has won the last six games in the series between the two schools.
