Bologna vs Celtic preview
With the miserable Wilfried Nancy experiment finally over, Martin O’Neill’s second return to Celtic this season has sparked an immediate turnaround in results for the Bhoys, and they can continue their unbeaten start under the 73-year-old when they visit home-favourites Bologna.
O’Neill won six of his eight games in charge following his interim appointment in October, and his second interim spell has begun with three successive victories to breathe some life into the Hoops.
Their chances of a top-eight finish in the Europa League league phase are slim at best, but they have some work to do in the final two fixtures to secure a position in the playoff round, and they can get over the first hurdle against a declining Bologna outfit on Thursday.
The Rossoblu lost 2-1 at home to relegation candidates Fiorentina at the weekend and have won only one of their nine games since their last Europa League assignment.
They have won only one of their three home games in this competition, and Celtic’s last trip away in the Europa League was a convincing 3-1 success against Feyenoord.
With form on their side and just one defeat in 11 matches under O’Neill this season, the Bhoys’ resurgence should continue in Emilia-Romagna.
Nygren to star in Bologna
Celtic midfielder Benjamin Nygren has two goals and one assist from six Europa League appearances this season, and the 24-year-old Swede can add to his tally and continue his fine run of form.
Nygren was rested for the Hoops’ cup tie with Auchinleck Talbot last time out but has scored in his two appearances since O’Neill’s return to the dugout.
He has seven goal contributions in his last six games, taking his tally to a club-high 13 goals and four assists.
Hosts have enough to score in defeat
All three of Celtic’s recent successive victories have been accompanied by a clean sheet, but that shutout run could end in Italy.
Despite their sub-par form, Thursday’s hosts have scored in five of their last six games and they have blanked in just two of their six Europa League games.
However, after suffering back-to-back home defeats and facing a revived Celtic outfit, their goals may do little to affect the result as the underdogs look to upset the odds.
Bologna vs Celtic Bet Builder
Benjamin Nygren 1+ shots on target
Benjamin Nygren has had a club-high 57 shots in all competitions this season and has hit the target with 26 of those. He has registered at least one shot on target in five of his last six appearances for Celtic and will be one of their main attacking outlets on Thursday.
Santiago Castro to score or assist
Only Riccardo Orsolini has had more goal involvements for Bologna this season than Santiago Castro, and the Argentine attacker heads into this game with a goal or an assist in three of his last four starts for the club, while he also had four shots against Fiorentina last time out.
Riccardo Orsolini 1+ shots on target
Riccardo Orsolini has averaged 1.39 shots-on-target-per-90-minutes this season for a total of 27 attempts on target. He has tested the opposition goalkeeper at least once in eight of his last 11 starts, including three shots on target in his last home Europa League outing.
