‘Song Sung Blue’ Oscar Nominee Kate Hudson Says “Claire Is So Happy” With The Film Despite Some Family Comments; ‘Running Point’ Season 2 Update

Thursday morning was a good one for Kate Hudson, who received an Oscar nomination for her role as Claire Stengl in Song Sung Blue. Hudson, who was also nominated for a Golden Globe and an Actors Award for the role, told Deadline she is “insanely emotional” about the story.

Song Sung Blue follows Claire and her husband Mike Sardina (Hugh Jackman) as they form a Neil Diamond tribute band while navigating some shocking life challenges.

“I remember reading [the script] for the first time and going, ‘Is all of this real?’” Hudson said, shortly after the nominations announcement. “I can’t even believe that one person has experienced this in their life. I got to do everything I ever wanted to do in one role… and then on top of that, the responsibility of it being a true story and wanting to do right by Claire and be as honest with it as I could.”

Claire is so happy. And my relationship with Claire and telling her story and this love story – it’s such a love letter to them. And I am just so grateful that Claire was and is pleased and I just can’t wait to talk to her.

Although Michael Sardina Jr., the son of late musician Sardina recently spoke out against the film, Hudson is focused on Stengl’s reaction to the film. “Claire is so happy,” she said, “and my relationship with Claire and telling her story and this love story – it’s such a love letter to them. And I am just so grateful that Claire was and is pleased and I just can’t wait to talk to her. People’s reaction to the movie, the way it’s moved people, that’s what I think about.”

Coming up on the horizon for Hudson is the second season of her Netflix comedy series, Running Point. “I’m literally going in to edit right now,” she said. “One thing I can say is that I got to work with Ray Romano, who I had so much fun with on this season. I just hope we get to do another season and that he’s a part of it. Because let me tell you, him and I laugh so hard, I can’t even take it. I’m obsessed with the seventh episode. That’s all I can say. I just watched it and it made me laugh my butt off. It’s such a great season. It’s filled, it’s jam-packed, and I am excited and I can’t wait to get in there and see my Showrunner. I’ll probably cry a little when I see him.”

Hudson has now been Oscar nominated twice. The first time was in 2000 for her supporting role of Penny Lane in Almost Famous.
