Ultra rare weather event could happen in Middle Tennessee next week

Nashville, Tennessee
A major winter storm hits this weekend with snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain.
In that storm’s wake, temperatures have a realistic chance of bottoming out at zero.
Nashville rarely checks in with a goose egg for a morning low. The last time it happened was in 2024. Before that, is was 2022. Before that, you have to go back to the 1990s. That means a zero-degree temperature has only registered at Nashville International Airport twice this millennium.
However, when Nashville has a snowpack, the chance of hitting zero is much higher. Snow on the ground prevents the Earth’s energy from escaping, warming the lower atmosphere. Snow also reflects most of the sun’s visible light during the day preventing much daytime heating.
Tuesday morning looks extremely cold — the coldest in months. In many areas, temperatures will tumble to near negative territory.
