MBTA announces service changes for massive winter storm

With a major winter storm barreling toward Massachusetts, the MBTA has announced service changes for the commuter rail, Mattapan Trolley, buses and ferries.

Several buses will operate on their snow routes Sunday and Monday to avoid steep hills, tight corners and narrow streets, the transit agency said in a statement.

All commuter rail lines will follow their reduced storm schedules on Monday, which provide about a third of regular weekday service, the MBTA said.

The Mattapan Trolley will likely be suspended and replaced with shuttle buses on Monday due to expected snow accumulation, the MBTA said.

Regular service is expected on its light-rail lines, with the exception of a stretch of the Blue Line between Bowdoin and Orient Heights on Saturday and Sunday, which was previously announced, according to the statement.

The MBTA encourages to see the T-Alerts website, subscribe to text and email notifications, download the MBTA Go app, or follow the MTBA on X for the most up-to-date service information.

Ferry routes will operate on a reduced schedule, the MBTA said. Hingham/Hull/Logan/Boston will run hourly while Charlestown will operate every 30 minutes, the MBTA said.

There will be normal service for The Ride on Monday, but the MBTA anticipates “snow-related travel delays.”

Regular services are expected to return on Tuesday, the MBTA said.

With freezing temperatures and stormy conditions, the MBTA urged riders to be safe and plan ahead while using transit.

“MBTA riders are reminded to use caution on platforms, at bus stops, when boarding/alighting trains, accessing stations, and approaching railroad crossings,” the statement said.
