NFL news: Sean Payton provides update on Bo Nix after QB’s surgery

After breaking his ankle in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs last weekend, Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix underwent season-ending surgery with Dr. Norman Waldrop in Birmingham, Alabama, on Tuesday.

One day after that procedure, the Broncos took the practice field on Wednesday as they began preparing to host the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game on Sunday. After practice, Denver coach Sean Payton said Nix’s surgery went well.

“I spoke to him right prior,” Payton said. “The surgery went well, all those things. All the players individually had their own, I’m sure, visit with him.”

Once he’s able, Nix will be back around the team.

“I’m sure there’s going to be a protocol back in Alabama,” Payton said. “I don’t have a date of when he arrives back, but we look forward to seeing him soon.”

Nix, 25, will now focus on rehab with the goal of returning ahead of the 2026 NFL season. The Broncos, meanwhile, are set to start Jarrett Stidham against the Patriots on Sunday. After losing Nix, Denver’s considered a home underdog going into the AFC title game.
