Michael Jordan Sends Video Message to Derrick Rose Ahead of Bulls Jersey Retirement Ceremony

Before Derrick Rose officially joins the exclusive club of players who have had their jersey retired by the Chicago Bulls, he received a message from the greatest player in franchise history.

Michael Jordan sent in a video message congratulating Rose for getting his jersey retired by the Bulls at a ceremony that will take place after the team’s game against the Boston Celtics on Saturday.

The Bulls announced in April that Rose would have his No. 1 jersey retired on Jan. 24, 2026. He will be the fifth player in franchise history to receive the honor, joining Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Jerry Sloan and Bob Love. Bill Russell’s No. 6 is also retired across the NBA.

In addition to the jersey retirement ceremony, the Bulls are also planning an immersive experience for fans with an atrium open to the public throughout the day and a food-and-drink menu inspired by Rose.

Items on the menu include nachos with the tortilla chips cut into the shape of the number one, rose-shaped cake pops, a Rose cocktail and a Rose #1 Jersey Cookie.

Rose was the No. 1 pick by the Bulls in the 2008 draft. He is one of only two players drafted first overall by the organization, along with Elton Brand in 1999.

Born and raised in Chicago before attending Memphis, Rose spent the first eight years of his career with the Bulls. He won Rookie of the Year in 2008-09, followed by winning MVP two years later.

During Rose’s MVP campaign, the Bulls finished 62-20 in the regular season. It is tied for the third-most wins in a single season in franchise history and marks the only time they won at least 60 games without Jordan on the roster.

Rose remains the youngest player in NBA history to be named MVP, winning the award at the age of 22. He is one of 16 players to win both Rookie of the Year and MVP in their careers.

Tipoff of the Celtics-Bulls game from the United Center is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Saturday night.
