Staff at Liverpool Women’s Hospital are said to be ‘spitting feathers’ as some of them face the prospect of their parking costs rising by as much as 400%. Midwives and other staff members based at the city’s dedicated maternity and gynaecology hospital in Crown Street say a combination of factors, including the loss of an existing car park and the fact the hospital will now come under the wider Liverpool University Hospital’s parking structure means they will be seriously out of pocket and majorly inconvenienced when trying to get to work.
The car park where a number of staff have parked for many years, at Mulgrave Street, is being removed after Liverpool City Council approved plans for a new school – Eden Girls’ Leadership Academy – in the area. The plans for the new school mean that the hospital will no longer have access to the car park in Mulgrave Street from the end of next month.
Liverpool Women’s says alternative staff parking arrangements have been found and that all existing permit members will have access to a parking space.
But what is worrying staff more is the fact that they are set to see the existing prices they pay to park rise sharply.
This is because the Liverpool Women’s Hospital is now part of the wider University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, which includes the city’s larger hospitals like the Royal Liverpool and Aintree.
As a result of this, the Women’s will now form part of the wider group’s estates and facilities directorate and this will see their rates for parking rise, in some cases dramatically.

One staff member said they are currently paying around £120 per year for parking and may now see their annual costs rise to a shocking £600 per year.
Responding, a spokesperson for Liverpool Women’s Hospital said: “Our priority is to ensure that staff members are able to park as close to their place of work as possible.
“Liverpool Women’s has been planning for the closure of the Mulgrave Street car park for some time, following agreement with Liverpool City Council to vacate the site by the end of February 2026, for redevelopment.
“Alternative staff parking arrangements have been identified, and all existing permit holders will continue to have access to a parking space.
“Changes to parking tariffs for staff at Liverpool Women’s form part of a wider NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group review to ensure consistency and equity across all hospital sites.
“Concessions are in place and individual circumstances are being listened to as part of the review process.”
