2026 winter storm: Montgomery County preps underway ahead of weekend freeze

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Montgomery County leaders said they are prepared and ready for the impact of this weekend’s wintry blast.

“They’ve got their people ready to go, and they are all anticipating what is coming in our direction,” Montgomery County Judge Mark Keough said.

ABC13 meteorologists report that by Saturday afternoon, the freeze will start to set in for Montgomery County. With the National Weather Service predicting a quarter-inch of ice, energy providers like Entergy Texas said they anticipate some power outages.

“Once you get past a quarter of an inch going into or an inch of ice, then that causes a lot of weight on trees, branches, so of course, causing them to fall,” Kenny Muhammad with Entergy Texas said.

In anticipation of outages, Keough says seven warming shelters have been opened across the county. Food and water are available, and the animal shelter has supplies to keep your pets warm at home.

“Everybody is geared up and waiting for this series of events, so I mean we’ve been working hard at it, so come on, let’s go, let’s get this thing going,” Keough said.

Keough said after Hurricane Beryl, they wanted to establish stronger communication with power providers to know when outages happen, when they should be fixed, and who is being impacted. The energy providers will all have a spot at the command center, Keough said, so they can get the latest information right from the source and to the public.

Now is the time to make any last-minute trips to the grocery or hardware store. Keough is hoping people will take his advice, hunker down, and ride out the cold from home.

If you need food, water, or a warm place to stay, Judge Keough said the office of emergency management Facebook page will provide the latest updates and information on how to get supplies and stay safe.
