History
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team fell 2-1 to the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday (Jan. 24) night at Varsity Arena.
The opening period was tightly contested between two OUA West rivals as both teams traded chances. Waterloo broke through late in the period for the icebreaker as Brendan Bays capitalized to give them the lead going into intermission.
U of T answered early in the second period as fourth-year captain Mark Cooper broke into the offensive zone and sent the puck to a covering Sean Clarke. Clarke’s shot was tipped in by third-year forward Christian Stevens for his fourth goal of the season. The Blue and White kept the offensive pressure up throughout the period, firing 17 shots on goal in the middle frame. Midway through the period, the Warriors were able to regain the lead with a goal from Nate Bierd.
In the third period, the Blues pushed hard as fourth-year goalie Rayce Ramsay was stellar between the pipes to keep the score unchanged. Toronto continued to apply pressure in the offensive zone and firing pucks on net in search of a game-tying goal. Despite sustained efforts, the Blues couldn’t get an equalizer past goaltender Matt Onuska before the final buzzer.
The Blues are back in action on Friday (Jan. 30) night when they take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves in Thunder Bay. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on oua.tv.
