Live updates on road conditions after winter weather brings ice, sleet to Tennessee Valley

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Multiple crashes and icy roads were reported on major roads across the Tennessee Valley on Saturday.

Huntsville Police have closed all Memorial Parkway overpasses (northbound and southbound) due to icy conditions. These bridges are slick and dangerous. Authorities are asking people to use alternate routes.

Current Road Status:

Madison County

  • Memorial Parkway overpasses: Closed
  • 14th Street between Governors Drive and Holmes Avenue: Closed
  • Highway 53/ Research Park Blvd.: Closed
  • All elevated areas of Research Park Blvd.: Closed
  • Highway 53/ Ready Section Road: Impassable
  • Browns Ferry Road: Impassable
  • Memorial Parkway (from Oakwood Ave. to Airport Rd.): Closed

Limestone County

  • Athens Police Chief Anthony Pressnell reports streets in Athens becoming impassable.

Morgan County

  • Hwy 231 on Brindlee Mtn: Open
  • Hwy. 31 (Hartselle Mountain between Flint and Hartselle): Open
  • I-65 Northbound south of Falkville: Open
  • Targum Rd. at Stephenson Rd. near Danville is completely flooded. This water could freeze with the temperatures dropping.
  • MORGAN CO. EMA: Road conditions across Morgan County are getting worse quickly as ice continues to develop. Roads that were passable earlier are now becoming slick and hazardous, especially after dark. We are seeing rapid ice buildup on roadways, with bridges, overpasses, and shaded area icing first. Secondary, rural, and neighborhood roads are becoming increasingly unsafe, and vehicles are already having trouble stopping and maintaining control.

Lauderdale County

  • Black ice is beginning to form on roadways throughout the county, including highways. Travel is highly discouraged.

Franklin County, AL

  • FRANKLIN COUNTY, AL EMA: All roads and bridges maintained by Franklin County should be considered impassable until further notice. Members of the general public are advised that when roads and bridges become impassable, all travel should be suspended or delayed. Only emergency vehicles should travel on county roads and bridges until further notice.

DeKalb County

  • The DeKalb County Road Department has barricaded and closed Hall’s Gap and County Road 851 due to hazardous road conditions expected overnight.

Lawrence County

  • LAWRENCE CO. EMA: Numerous wrecks and vehicles in ditches along AL-20 between Town Creek and Morgan County line due to icy road conditions. Roadways are rapidly deteriorating.

Colbert County

  • Colbert Co. EMA: All County roads and bridges in Colbert County should be considered impassible until further notice.

Tennessee

  • I-65 is closed in Tennessee near mile marker 14

Due to icy road conditions, Huntsville Public Transit’s Orbit and Access service has limited routes. They will continue pick-ups until 5 p.m. on Saturday, except for Routes 9, 10, and 56. Those routes will remain suspended due to weather conditions.
