Good morning, I’m a senior writer for CBC’s live page team. Today, the House of Commons reopens in Ottawa after an eventful break.
Sources have told my colleagues at the parliamentary bureau that Prime Minister Mark Carney will announce a hike to the GST credit as well as other affordability measures.
His Liberal party returns to Parliament two seats shy of a majority, prompting questions about whether the party could be on the cusp of securing a majority — or triggering a general election.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, whose leadership is under review this month, wrote a letter to Carney over the weekend, saying his party would co-operate with the government on certain issues and urging faster approval for major projects.
Last week, Canada reached an agreement with China to allow 49,000 Chinese EVs into the market at a lowered tariff rate of 6.1 per cent in exchange for China lowering tariffs on Canadian canola and other products.
The deal prompted ire from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has taken to calling Carney “governor.”
