Chia seeds sold nationwide recalled for potential salmonella contamination

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Chia seeds sold across the country were recalled because the product could be contaminated with salmonella.
The Food and Drug Administration issued a recall for Navitas Organics chia seeds that were sold nationwide at Whole Foods locations and on Amazon.
The recall was issued after the company’s chia seed supplier learned the product may have been exposed to salmonella.
“Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” the FDA wrote. “Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses.”
