A difficult start to the season has turned into something more promising for Girona, who have won four of their last five matches and have used contacts and geography to conduct some excellent January transfer business.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s desire to stay close to Barcelona was a big factor in his loan move to the Montilivi, as he targets minutes and a place in Germany’s World Cup squad.
Partner club Manchester City have also loaned the Blanquivermells Claudio Echeverri, while Fran Beltran’s signing from Celta Vigo looks shrewd.
They can continue their positive run against Getafe, who started the season with three wins from four but are now flirting with relegation after failing to record a victory in their last six La Liga outings.
The Azulones have also made signings to try to appease increasingly bewildered coach Jose Bordelas.
However, their new arrivals appear something of a motley crew and Bordelas’ boys could suffer their 12th defeat in 21 La Liga matches in 2025-26.
