Former Buffalo Bills pass-rusher Jerry Hughes says Sean McDermott firing was overdue

The Buffalo Bills are in the midst of finding a new head coach. One former player who spent multiple seasons with Sean McDermott, however, feels like the search is long overdue.
Former Bills pass-rusher Jerry Hughes became very outspoken on X, formerly Twitter, about McDermott in the past 24 hours.
Hughes, who played for the Bills from 2013-2021, initially reacted to McDermott’s firing with a GIF on X that read, “Wow… okay, okay.”
Many fans reacted to the post, but Hughes seemed to step away from his computer until Sunday. That’s when he started responding to Bills fans, and he didn’t hold back.
When one fan asked Hughes about leaving the team after playing for McDermott for five seasons, Hughes said he had seen enough.
“Once Sean screwed up the 13 seconds with his calls ‘prevent defense on every single play,’ I knew he wasn’t serious,” Hughes wrote.
He went on to add that if anyone should have left after the “13 seconds” game, it was McDermott.
“If the coach can manage to lose a football game in 13 seconds after the QB put together phenomenal play after phenomenal play. That coach should be fired,” Hughes added. “Seems like someone was on borrowed time.”
After McDermott was dismissed by the Bills, multiple players, both current and former, shared praise for the head coach. Hughes is the first to go on record saying it was the right move for the organization.
One fan responded to Hughes’ initial GIF reaction, saying the fans didn’t want to see McDermott go. According to Hughes, the move was needed for the team to finally hoist a Lombardi Trophy.
“If u want to win a SB (Super Bowl), you should,” Hughes responded.
After leaving the Bills in 2021, Hughes would spend his final three seasons in the league with the Houston Texans. He did not play anywhere in 2025 and may have retired from the game. Based on his willingness to not hold back his thoughts, perhaps Hughes has a future in sports talk.
