More snow? Yep, we’re not done yet.

So we’ll have to wait and see what the final tally is.
The bulk of this storm, the largest New England has seen in four years, moved through by 2 a.m., with lingering snow showers now continuing into early Monday evening.
Most of us in Southern New England will see an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow, with some isolated 4 or 5-inch accumulations, especially over Essex County and perhaps down into Boston and parts of the South Shore from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

While we had very rapid accumulation over a short amount of time during the first part of the storm into Sunday evening, the second half on Monday will actually be the opposite, with very little accumulation. Snowfall total maps that you’re seeing include the snow that will fall during the day on Monday.

Five of the Boston area’s top snowmakers all occurred since the year 2000, and there are several explanations for this. One of them is that a warmer climate brings more moisture, so storms produce more potential snowfall when it can snow.
The other reason is the fact that the standardized practice of clearing a snowboard every six hours and adding up the totals became accepted practice in the past 25 years. Before that, most storm observers waited till the entire storm was over to measure it, and that allowed for compaction to take place, so numbers were lower.
Frigid cold spell continues
The cold weather also continues into Monday. Temperatures during the day will only reach the 20s, so it’ll be a little less uncomfortable for cleaning up the snow than it has been.

Look-ahead: The snow won’t be melting anytime soon
And if you are thinking that we’re going to see any melting this week, think again. Temperatures will not go above freezing for the entire week. As a matter of fact, this is going to be one of the colder weeks we’ve had in quite some time, with temperatures at night between a frigid 2 and 12 degrees and during the day struggling to reach 18 to 25 degrees.
For those who have had enough, this Arctic cold will likely relax during the first week of February. The good news for those of you who aren’t looking forward to more shoveling, I don’t see any snowstorms this week after this major storm. Next threat? We’ll monitor a possible system for next Sunday, but it’s early.
