Australian Open day ten preview
The cream has risen to the top at the Australian Open with number one seeds Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka still in the title hunt at the quarter-final stage.
Alcaraz, bidding to make the final four in Melbourne for the first time, takes on home favourite Alex de Minaur while two-time women’s champion Sabalenka does battle with rising star Iva Jovic.
Third seeds Alexander Zverev and Coco Gauff are also still in the shake-up, with the German meeting Daniil Medvedev’s conqueror Learner Tien, and the American locking horns with the consistent Elina Svitolina.
Carlos Alcaraz vs Alex de Minaur predictions
Six-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz is hoping to break new ground at the Australian Open by registering a first semi-final appearance and the Spaniard can cruise past Alex De Minaur to complete the feat.
Alcaraz has eased into the quarter-final without dropping a set, the latest of which was an impressive 7-6 6-4 7-5 victory over the dangerous Tommy Paul.
These slick conditions are to the liking of Paul, but Alcaraz faced only two break-point opportunities and is serving impeccably.
De Minaur, armed with passionate home support, will require maximum focus but the Australian tends to falter at this stage, having lost all six of his Grand Slam quarter-finals.
Alcaraz has dominated this rivalry, winning all five meetings with three straight-set victories, and De Minaur was brushed aside 6-3 6-2 6-1 by Jannik Sinner in last season’s quarter-final.
Alexander Zverev vs Learner Tien predictions
Having made the fourth round of last season’s Australian Open on his main-draw debut, Learner Tien has shown that was no fluke by going one step further this year.
The 20-year-old talent caused a stir with a ruthless 6-4 6-0 6-3 win over three-time runner-up Medvedev in the fourth round and Alexander Zverev is not sure to have things all his own way.
The German outclassed Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets last time out but he needed four sets in victories over Gabriel Diallo, Alexandre Muller and Cameron Norrie.
Tien was no match for Zverev in last season’s French Open, having lost 3-0, but a fast surface brings out the best in him and he did down the German in Acapulco in February.
Last season’s runner-up Zverev may have too much tactical nous for the American youngster in the crunch moments, but it is unlikely to be a cakewalk.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Iva Jovic predictions
Aryna Sabalenka has made three straight Australian Open finals, taking the prize in 2023 and 2024 before last year’s defeat to Madison Keys, and everything looks in place for the world number one to reach another Melbourne title decider.
Sabalenka has powered to four straight-sets victories – the latest of which came against recent Adelaide runner-up Victoria Mboko – and it is 1-2 for her to soar into the semis with another 2-0 win.
Iva Jovic, a serious talent at just 18 years of age, merits respect having also won all four of her matches in routine fashion which includes toppling seventh seed Jasmine Paolini.
However, this is the biggest match of her fledgling career and it would be a tough ask for her to nullify Sabalenka’s brute force.
Coco Gauff vs Elina Svitolina predictions
Coco Gauff has been made to work hard in her last two assignments, outlasting Hailey Baptiste and Karolina Muchova to win in deciding sets, and her quarter-final clash with Elina Svitolina could follow the same pattern of play.
The American is a warrior but knows she will have to be at her brilliant best to stop Svitolina, who is yet to drop a set and has accounted for two strong seeds in Diana Shnaider and Mirra Andreeva.
However, Gauff has won her last two meetings with Svitolina in three sets and the Ukrainian world number 12 was beaten 2-1 by Keys in last year’s quarter-final.
