3 things to look for in the 2026 BAFTA nominations

With the Oscar nominations in the rearview, our attention turns towards Tuesday’s 2026 BAFTA announcement. The venerable U.K.-based awards, which have grown to become a key Oscar bellwether as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has expanded its international membership, have the opportunity to right some wrongs, create new drama, and underscore the favorites as the season rolls along. Here are the key storylines going into the nominations, along with how the Gold Derby prediction data is handicapping nine major categories.

One race we’re focusing on is Best Supporting Actor to see if the father-and-son duo of Stellan Skarsgård and Alexander Skarsgård can both make it in. The former is a hot awards contender for Sentimental Value (he already won the Golden Globe and received an Oscar bid) while the latter is on the bubble for the underrated Pillion. Based on our data, the family should be celebrating on Tuesday.

The Oscars may have shockingly snubbed Paul Mescal (Hamnet) and Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another), but their awards journeys aren’t over quite yet. Both contenders made it onto the BAFTA longlists and are projected by Gold Derby to receive respective nominations for Best Supporting Actor and Best Actress.

Speaking of Infiniti, Gold Derby is forecasting that One Battle After Another will do even better at the BAFTAs in the above-the-line races than it did at the Oscars. We predict it will receive a leading eight top noms: Best Picture, Best Director (Paul Thomas Anderson), Best Actress (Infiniti), Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), Best Supporting Actress (Teyana Taylor), Best Supporting Actor (Benicio Del Toro), Best Supporting Actor (Sean Penn), and Best Adapted Screenplay. One Battle received seven of those top bids (and 13 total) last week at the Oscars, just missing Best Actress.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts pares down the number of possible contenders in each race by revealing longlists several weeks before the nominations. That leaves 10 hopefuls in the running for most categories, with only six in Best Animated Feature (none of which is Oscar frontrunner KPop Demon Hunters).

Best Director and the four acting categories — Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress — are expected to have six nominations apiece. Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Adapted Screenplay, and the crafts are expected to have five nominees per race. Best Animated Feature should only have four in the lineup.
