An Emirates flight from Dubai has safely landed at Edinburgh Airport after declaring a mid-air emergency. Flight EK35 was due to land in Newcastle at 11.20am this morning but diverted to the capital.

The Boeing 777 circled the skies above Newcastle and Sunderland before the pilot initiated an emergency procedure known as squawking 7700.

Data from flight tracking app FlightRadar24 appears to show the plane attempting to land at Newcastle Airport before twice performing a ‘go-around’ – a procedure where pilots abort a landing attempt, turn around and try again.

The flight then turns north before safely landing at Edinburgh Airport. Emergency response squawking 7700 means a general emergency has been declared.

It can cover a range of scenarios including a technical or medical emergency.

The procedure allows air traffic controllers and ground crews to respond to the emergency in the most effective manner.
