Odessa A’zion drops out of A24 movie Deep Cuts after casting backlash

Marty Supreme and I Love LA breakout Odessa A’zion just removed a project from her dance card. On Monday, TheWrap reported that A’zion would star in Deep Cuts, an upcoming A24 project based on a novel by Holly Brickley. However, late last night, A’zion announced on Instagram that she is pulling out of the project after her casting caused backlash online. Per Variety, the character she was slated to play, Zoe Gutierrez, is Jewish and of Mexican heritage. The story follows two “music-obsessed twenty-somethings” over the course of the 2000s.

“Guys! I am with all of you and I am not doing this movie. Lemme make myself clear,” she wrote on her story. “THANK YOU guys for bringing this to my attention. I AGREE WITH EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU! This is why I love you guys. I’m so so sorry that this happened. It is SO important for me to let you all in on how it went down: I went in for Percy, but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes! I’m so pissed y’all, I hadn’t read the book and should have paid attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting…and now that I know what I know? Fuck that. I’m out! I’d never take a role from someone else that’s meant to do it. That SHOULD do it! That’s not me. There are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role and I am not one of them. I can’t wait to see who it ends up being.”

Cailee Spaeny and Drew Starkey are also slated to star in the film as Percy and Joe, respectively. Austin Butler and Saoirse Ronan were attached to the project at one point, but had to drop out due to scheduling issues, per Variety. Eli Bush, Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie will produce the project.
