‘Daldal’ Review: Not just Bhumi Pednekar; even Aditya Rawal & Samara Tijori’s killer performances will keep you glued to the screen!

Language: Hindi

Director: Amrit Raj Gupta

Cast: Bhumi Satish Pednekar, Aditya Rawal, Samara Tijori, Geeta Agrawal, Chinmay Mandlekar, Ananth Narayan Mahadevan

Coming from a broken family with a traumatic childhood can affect a person’s adulthood. You refuse to trust people, and you are always in a foul mood, and that’s exactly what happens to each of the prominent characters in Prime Video’s Daldal. These adults  carry unresolved trauma into their own relationships.

Bhumi Pednekar’s _Daldal_ is not just a show; it is, in fact, a reflection of our society where underprivileged men and women go through the pain of being cheated so much that they refuse to trust anybody in the society, even if someone is willing to help.

Inspired by Vish Dhamija’s book Bhendi BazaarDaldal literally shows how much marsh you are in and how you get sucked into one trouble followed by another. Unlike Dhamija’s fast-paced crime thriller book, set in Mumbai, centered around the city’s first serial killer who targets men visiting high-class escorts, Daldal can be called a slow burn. The story of the show is handled with utmost honesty and sensitivity. The best thing about Daldal is that it doesn’t rush to show the plot. It allows time for the story to brew.

I am so happy to see Bhumi Pednekar back with her craft in full swing, doing what she does best. Daldal doesn’t have any unnecessary noise.  Bhumi has nailed the role of DCP Rita Ferreira with her restrained silence, with her eyes doing most of the talking. She commands without being noisy. Behind her restrained expressions hide her deep scars, the wounds of which have not yet healed.

The story of Daldal is about a serial killer in Mumbai who murders men, creating a wave of panic in the city. DCP Rita Ferreira (Bhumi Pednekar) leads the investigation trying to find out the pattern of the killer. The character of Rita, played by Bhumi Pednekkar, is not just battling with criminals, but she is also battling with her inner demons and truths that threaten to dismantle everything she stands for. Not just how she behaves, moves, or commands; there is a certain mystery in her character that will keep you engaged in the show.
Bhumi steps into the shoes of a cop for the first time, and she simply nails it.

Rita (Bhumi Pednekar) too has a traumatic past and can switch any moment to her dark side. She believes in stoic philosophy, and she has very few dialogues in Daldal.  The series shows meticulously orchestrated murders that expose the deeply twisted psyche of a cold-blooded killer.  She in some way empathises with the two killers, who are actually drug addicts played by Aditya Rawal and Samara Tijori, mostly because she too has gone through a traumatic past, just the way these two characters have gone through life. Hence, she empathises with them.

The series is tight, and it doesn’t waste time with frills and fancies. It is great to see Bhumi back to doing an immersive and intelligent role after her The Royals fiasco. She is damn good at her craft, and she gets into the skin of the character so much that she really doesn’t care the way she looks. And that’s the way we are used to seeing Bhumi on screen.

Daldal is directed by Amrit Raj Gupta and produced by Vikram Malhotra and Suresh Triveni. An Abundantia Entertainment production, the psychological crime thriller is created by Suresh Triveni and written by Sreekanth Agneeaswaran, Rohan D’Souza, and Priya Saggi, with dialogues penned by Suresh Triveni and Hussain Haidry. Both Aditya Rawal and Samara Tijori have given their best. Samara Tijori plays the role of an anti-hero with ease and in some places, you will sympathise with her.

The only thing that I didn’t like about the show is the ending which I found to be slightly underwhelming. You can binge watch Daldal or watch it at one go, just the way I did. But don’t give it a miss. And watch the show carefully because it is not just a crime thrillers, it’s a psychological crime thrillers for which you need to understand the psyche of each of the characters.
