Djokovic hides shock $43m to retire at 38

After this year’s Australian Open, rumours have swirled around tennis great Novak Djokovic winding down the clock on his career.
Retirement could be on the horizon for the Serb, who is now 38 – the same age big three rival Rafael Nadal was when he called time on his playing days.
Having racked up the most Grand Slam singles titles in tennis history, Djokovic has put his jaw-dropping career earnings to good use, building an empire of multimillion dollar homes across the US and Europe.

Combining the reported prices of properties owned by Djokovic (which excludes one unknown price), he has forked out $43.161m on luxury digs around the world.
That is a fraction of the $US189m ($282m) he has made in prize money – the largest sum in the history of tennis according to Forbes.

BELGRADE, SERBIA
Djokovic owns a $1.091m penthouse apartment in his home country, which was purchased 10 years ago, according to Tennis World USA.
According to The Sun, the luxury home is built on the shores of Pavlovac Lake in Belgrade, Serbia’s capital.

There are three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a huge dining room and kitchen, as well as a pool and terrace included in the apartment.
Realtor recently reported that Djokovic had listed the apartment for rent for the staggering sum of $17,542 USD ($26,185) a night.

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK
Djokovic moved into the US market in 2017 – possibly aiming to secure a place to call home during US Open tours.
The Sun reports that he spent £8.3m ($16.6m) for not one but two luxury apartments in New York City’s Soho neighbourhood.
While not adjacent, the apartments are said to be on the same floor.
Features include white oak floors, custom-made furniture and heated floors.

MIAMI, FLORIDA
In 2020, Djokovic added to his US portfolio, buying in Eighty Seven Park, a luxury development in Florida.
According to The Sun, he spent £5.3m ($10.6m) on the apartment which boasts panoramic views over Miami Beach.
The unit is a three-bedroom, three-bathroom property, and the amenities within the development include a 55-foot heated pool and an exclusive underground spa.

MARBELLA, SPAIN
Djokovic reportedly spends the majority of his time at the creme de la creme of his property collection – a $10m USD ($14.93m) mansion in Marbella, Spain – an affluent resort city on the Costa del Sol in Andalusia.
The nine-bedroom, eight-bathroom home on Spain’s south coast was purchased in 2020 and can often be seen on his Instagram page.
The Moroccan-style villa includes a private grass tennis court as well as a gym, spa, games room, entertainment room and sauna.

MONTE CARLO, MONACO
Like many athletes and celebs, Djokovic reportedly owns a property in the high profile tax haven of Monte Carlo, Monaco.
Little is known about how much Djokovic paid for his Monegasque property, or what it looks like.
According to Architectural Digest, Djokovic first purchased the home after beginning his professional career in 2003.
The property reportedly looks over the Mediterranean Sea and is a stone’s throw from the Monte Carlo Country Club, the venue of the prestigious Monte Carlo Masters tennis tournament.

As well as a collection of properties, Djokovic also has endorsements deals with a host of brands including Asics, Hublot and Lacoste.
The Serb may follow in the path of big three rival Roger Federer, who has leaned further into endorsements and investment post-tennis.
Federer signed a 10-year, $US300m ($447.59m) contract with Japanese apparel company Uniqlo in 2018, with a clause included in the contract that kept him on as an ambassador even after his retirement.

He also became a shareholder of Swiss shoe company On in 2019, investing $US50m ($74.6m) in 2019 for a three per cent stake in the company.
According to Boardroom, Federer’s stake in On Holdings is now worth nearly $US500m ($745.98m), with the company’s market cap having soared to roughly $US15bn ($22.38bn).
