Marco Bellocchio’s masterpiece Fists in the Pocket
In 1965, Italian director Marco Bellocchio shook up the traditional family unit with Fists in the Pocket (I pugni in tasca). In a large, isolated house, Alessandro, a young man suffering from epilepsy, suffocates amid a dysfunctional group of siblings and a blind mother. His rebellion eventually grows into a deadly plan…
Rejected by the Venice Film Festival, the film ultimately found its launch platform at the Locarno International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Sail in 1965 and established itself as one of the most disturbing films at the time. Martin Scorsese himself has since cited it as a major influence.

Rosebush Pruning, a remake directed by Karim Aïnouz
Sixty years later, Rosebush Pruning, a remake of Fists in the Pocket, lands in the official competition at the 2026 Berlinale, from February 12th to 22nd. Acclaimed in 2019 at the Cannes Film Festival in the category “Un Certain Regard” for The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão, Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz (Motel Destino) offers an intense family drama set in a rural place plagued by hereditary illnesses. For this project, the filmmaker teamed up with Greek screenwriter Efthimis Filippou, known for crafting the chilling worlds of Yorgos Lanthimos (Bugonia).

Pamela Anderson, Elle Fanning and Callum Turner in the cast
Rosebush Pruning brings together a prestigious cast. Karim Aïnouz’s twelfth feature will star Elle Fanning, Pamela Anderson, Callum Turner, Riley Keough, Jamie Bell and Tracy Letts (A House of Dynamite). Even if Elle Fanning and Riley Keough are well-versed in arthouse cinema, Pamela Anderson’s presence draws attention the most.
Following her acclaimed performance in Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl (2024), in which she played a Las Vegas dancer facing the end of her career, a role that earned her a Golden Globe nomination, the former Baywatch star keeps evolving.
Rosebush Pruning by Karim Aïnouz does not have a release date yet.
