76ers’ Paul George suspended 25 games for violating NBA’s anti-drug program

“Over the past few years, I’ve discussed the importance of mental health, and in the course of recently seeking treatment for an issue of my own, I made the mistake of taking an improper medication,” said George in a statement to ESPN.

“I take full responsibility for my actions and apologize to the Sixers organization, my teammates and the Philly fans for my poor decision making during this process. I am focused on using this time to make sure that my mind and body are in the best condition to help the team when I return.”

George will begin serving his suspension in Saturday’s contest against the New Orleans Pelicans. The suspension will cost George roughly $11.7 million of his $51.7 million salary.

The 35-year-old is in his second season with the 76ers. He’s averaging 16 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists through 27 games this year.

George’s tenure with the 76ers has been a nightmare. In 2024-25, he appeared in just 41 games and averaged under 20 points per game for the first time since 2014-15.

Philadelphia inked George to a maximum four-year, $211.58 million contract before last season. He previously spent five seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers.

The 76ers are 26-21 and sixth in the Eastern Conference. They are 16-11 when George plays, 10-10 when he does not.

George is expected to be eligible to return on March 25, when Philadelphia plays host to Chicago. The 76ers will have 10 games remaining in the regular season at that point.
