Casemiro has paid almost £11million in tax over the last 12 months as he prepares to leave Manchester United.

The 33-year-old moved to Old Trafford from Real Madrid in August 2022 for a fee rising to £70million, signing a four-year deal with an option for a further season. It is understood that United decided against keeping Casemiro beyond the end of the campaign and agreed to the player’s request to confirm his summer exit this month.

The Brazilian earns a whopping £375,000 per week according to The Sunday Times Tax List, making him UK football’s third-highest taxpayer behind Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah of Liverpool.

Casemiro has already been strongly linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League, where financial incentives are obvious. As well as the huge salaries being paid, footballers do not pay tax on earnings in Saudi Arabia, in contrast to the 45 per cent rate applied in the UK on salaries exceeding £125,000.

After his impending departure was confirmed, Casemiro said: “I will carry Manchester United with me throughout my entire life.

“It is not time to say goodbye. There are many more memories to create during the next four months.”

Meanwhile, table-topper Haaland, who earns a basic salary of £500,000 per week, tops the football list after contributing £17m to public finances. The Norwegian reportedly earns an additional £10m in image rights and bonus payments.

Salah is next up on £14.5m, ahead of Casemiro on £10.9m. Raheem Sterling, who this week ended his contract with Chelsea by mutual consent, paid £9.8m in tax, £100,000 more than Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.

United’s Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva of City were level on £9m. The tax list was topped by bookmakers Betfred, who contributed £400m to the public purse. The likes of Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran and Anthony Joshua join Salah in the top 100.
