One of the most thrilling sights in all of hockey has taken place in a unique environment.
During the 2026 NHL Stadium Series, Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy and Boston Bruins netminder Jeremy Swayman engaged in a fight, marking the first-ever goalie fight in an outdoor game in league history.
The fisticuffs happened just past the halfway mark of the second period at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday night. With the Bruins up 5-2, tensions were starting to rise between the Atlantic Division rivals. Things spoiled over when Swayman made a save on a penalty kill, with Lightning forward Brandon Hagel taking a couple of extra pokes at the Boston backstop.
Swayman took exception, jumping on Hagel after the whistle blew. That drew the attention of Vasilevskiy, with the two netminders meeting at center ice.
WE’VE GOT A GOALIE FIGHT AT THE STADIUM SERIES GAME 💥
One could argue that Vasilevskiy won the fight, but the simple image of two netminders tossing their masks aside in a scenic outdoor game brought the fans in Tampa to their feet. Even players on both benches were jumping up and down, cheering on their respective goaltenders.
It is the first fight for both goaltenders in their careers.
Along with the fight and minor penalties for the two goalies leaving the crease, Hagel and Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy were also handed minors for their side-skirmish.
Vasilevskiy’s endeavor into the world of hand-to-hand combat marks the second time that a goaltender on a Florida team has decided to fight in a month. Just a few weeks ago, fellow Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky of the Florida Panthers squared off with San Jose Sharks goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic.
The fight seemed to have inspired the Lightning, as the team was able to cut into the deficit, only trailing by one near the end of the second period.
