Ioan Evans: 2000-2026

Everyone at the JD Cymru Leagues and Football Association of Wales are deeply saddened by the passing of Afan Lido forward Ioan Evans at the age of just 25.
An official statement from Afan Lido FC read:
“With the heaviest of hearts everyone at Afan Lido FC is devastated to learn of the tragic passing of Ioan Evans.
“We don’t really have the words to adequately express our grief at this time. Ioan loved being a Lido player, a committed club man, and he was immensely popular with everybody. He had time for everyone and a few words with Ioan were guaranteed to put a smile on your face. He was the smallest man in the room who had the biggest impact on those around him.
“We will be providing support to his teammates and a book of condolence will be opened in the club for anyone wishing to share memories and pay their respects.
“Our thoughts are with Ioan’s family and friends at this extremely sad time. Rest in peace, Ioan. You will always be remembered.”
Ioan Evans played for Afan Lido after joining from Cardiff Met in 2020
After growing up in the Rhondda, Evans studied at Cardiff Met University and made one appearance for the Archers in the JD Cymru Premier against Llanelli Town in April 2019. He was then part of the matchday squad as the Cyncoed club defeated Bala Town on penalties in the play-off final that season to qualify for Europe for the first time in their history.
He joined Afan Lido in October 2020, making his debut against Risca United in the Nathaniel MG Cup two months later. Evans went on to make 127 appearances for the JD Cymru South club, becoming one of their longest-serving players. He scored 16 goals and also captained the side on multiple occasions.
A hugely-popular figure amongst the players, officials and supporters of Lido, Evans was a regular starter and one of the most consistent performers in the team. His contribution both on and off the field will be profoundly missed by all those associated with the club.
Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Ioan’s family, friends and all those at Afan Lido FC at this very sad time. Cwsg mewn hedd, Ioan.
The Welsh Blood Service League Cup fixture between Newport City and Afan Lido on Friday 7 February has been postponed.
