Snow, Wind Slamming Newfoundland: Metro Area Shuts Down

A solid chunk of the island is hunkering down today as a major winter storm bears down.

Schools, businesses and government offices are all shut down.

Metrobus and GoBus is not operating today. All flights in and out of YYT are cancelled today.

Upwards of 50 cm is possible for eastern areas, with the brunt of it expected on the Northeast Avalon. It’ll be blustery as winds pick up to 100 km/h this morning.

Environment Canada meteorologist Veronica Sullivan says the bulk of the snow is going to fall throughout the day.

35 to 50 cm is forecast for the Northeast Avalon. The Southern Avalon will see lesser amounts with the possibility of some rain late this morning and into this afternoon.

Central and the northeast coast will also get a helping of snow while the west coast sits this one out.

15 to 30 cm is forecast for those areas with higher amounts further east and lesser amounts as you head west.

A coastal flood warning is also out for multiple regions.
