Here’s the latest on Obed Vargas’ rumored move to Atlético Madrid

With the Spanish transfer window due to close in a few hours, it still looks like Obed Vargas will complete a move to Atlético Madrid, albeit with a twist.
The latest development is that a Spanish photographer captured Big Foot-style coverage of Vargas exiting a car at the Atlético Madrid offices, with the assumption he’s there to sign his contract. That suggests an announcement is a mere formality at this point, with the expectation of a contract through 2030.
But there remains quite a bit we don’t know. From the Sounders’ perspective, there still aren’t any reports about a potential transfer fee aside from them retaining a “significant” sell-on fee. A fee of at least $3 million would allow the Sounders to max out what they can convert into General Allocation Money in a given year.
It’s also unclear where, exactly, Vargas will play at least for the remainder of the 2025-26 season. Most reports suggest that Atlético is looking at potential loan destinations somewhere else in La Liga. Among the teams that have been mentioned are Celta Vigo, Elche, Getafe and Mallorca. Celta is currently seventh and Elche is 11th in La Liga, while Getafe (16th) and Mallorca (18th) are both in a relegation battle.
