Geno Auriemma on Azzi Fudd and Sarah Strong

Geno Auriemma discusses how UConn is maximizing the skill sets of Azzi Fudd and Sarah Strong.

The No. 1 ranked UConn women’s basketball team will look for it 60th consecutive Big East victory on Wednesday (8 p.m. ET, truTV) against DePaul in Chicago at Wintrust Arena.

Sophomore Sarah Strong and senior Azzi Fudd are the top two scorers in the conference. The pair has accounted for 40% of the Huskies’ scoring this season and had 53 points in the rout of Tennessee on Sunday.

UConn coach Geno Auriemma said Strong and Fudd are counted on for leadership.

“Sarah’s voice is getting louder. Azzi, she doesn’t use her voice a lot, but when she does, it’s pretty impactful,” Auriemma said Sunday. “But I think leadership is, ‘We really need a bucket right now,’ and you make one. ‘We really need to stop the bleeding, and we need a 3-point play. We need a blocked shot here.’ To me it’s doing those things that really have to be done right now that makes the rest of the team go, ‘That’s why they are who they are.’”

Strong is averaging 19.4 points and 8.1 rebounds for the Huskies. Fudd adds 17.1 points a game.

The Huskies defeated DePaul 102-35 in December. Kate Novik is the Blue Demons leading scorer at 12.1 points a game.
