OMAHA – The Georgetown University women’s basketball team lost a close one 64-62 to the Creighton University Bluejays on Wednesday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Nebraska. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 12-11 overall and 5-9 in BIG EAST play, while the Bluejays improve to 11-12 and 7-7 in league action.  
 
How it Happened

  • Creighton started out hot from long range, taking an early 10-point lead.
  • A 9-3 Hoya run brought GU right back which included five points from sophomore Destiny Agubata.
  • The Jays led by just six at the end of the first, 19-13.
  • The second quarter belonged to the Hoyas as GU staged a 12-2 run sparked by a triple from Agubata and including five points from classmate Khadee Hession.
  • Creighton retook the lead in the final minute, but a basket off the glass from junior Brianna Byars made it 27-26 in favor of the Blue & Gray at the break.
  • Graduate student Brianna Scott opened the second half with back-to-back buckets, before Creighton answered by nailing two quick triples.
  • Scott hit one of her own on the other end, but Creighton would stage a 9-2 run to get the crowd going.
  • The duo of Scott and Agubata continued to score for the Blue & Gray, but GU trailed 50-44 at the end of the third.
  • Georgetown built a small advantage early in the final stanza, but Creighton once again found an answer.
  • A 3-pointer from Byars with 1:40 remaining put GU on top 62-60.
  • The Bluejays managed a layup on the other end, and in the final possession Creighton scored another in the lane to make the final 64-62.

Of Note

  • Agubata led the way with 21 points, eight rebounds and three steals in the contest.
  • Scott was also in double figures scoring 17 points for the game.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 39.7% (25-63) from the field, and allowed 46.4% (26-56) shooting by Creighton.
  • The Hoyas were outrebounded by the Bluejays, 38-31, and GU forced 13 CU turnovers on seven steals.
  • Neleigh Gessert led the way for Creighton with 31 points as one of two Bluejays in double figures.

  • The Hoyas will stay on the road to play the Villanova University Wildcats on Saturday afternoon at Finneran Pavilion in Pennsylvania.
