An eight-stall Tesla electric vehicle (EV) charging station should be in operation at the Skeena Mall by April 1.

In a provided statement, mall owners Loon Properties, a division of Bosa Properties of Vancouver, said the charging station will be open for all EV brands, not just Tesla vehicles.

The installation, called a supercharger in the Tesla world of EVs, has been under construction since late last year.

The stalls are now in place and under a protective wrapping.

The Loon Properties statement called the installation a value-added feature for the area and Skeena Mall.

Based on Tesla online mapping of its charging locations, there is already one Tesla charging station in Terrace, behind Ninja Sushi.

There is also a Tesla station in Kitimat. Both charge vehicles at a slower rate than the installation at the Skeena Mall, which will be classified as a supercharger location.

“Superchargers can add up to 322 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes. Since charging above 80 per cent is rarely necessary, stops are typically short and convenient,” a Tesla website stated.

There is only one other Tesla supercharger installation in northern B.C., in Prince George. The next closest one is in Quesnel.

The installation will add to the availability of publicly-available, fast-charger installations along B.C. highways.

Latest information available from BC Hydro states it operates 114 of 155 fast-charging locations. One of the BC Hydro locations is at the parking area just south of the Hw y16/Hwy 37 roundabout.
