Dangerous wind chills along with greasy and icy roads continue through Sunday

It’s been a rough mid-winter weekend in Central New York with bitter cold temperatures and dangerously low wind chills in the double digits below zero.

Check out these reports from early Saturday morning:

WIND CHILL REPORTS SATURDAY MORNING

I still have genuine concerns about frostbite and hypothermia now through Sunday morning with extreme cold warnings continuing.

Dressing in multiple layers, covering up all skin including your face, ears and fingers is a must!

At the same time the extreme cold is going on we also have some lake effect snow happening south and southeast of Lake Ontario where winter weather advisories continue through Sunday morning.

Very cold air crossing on a northwest to north-northwest flow over relatively warm lake waters of Lake Ontario is keeping lake effect snow across the following counties:

-Cayuga
-Cortland
-Onondaga
-Oswego
-Seneca
-Tompkins
-Wayne

With these cold temperatures and any light snow on the ground, roads will continue to be greasy and icy due to salt and brine mix not being one hundred percent effective.

As far as snow amounts I’m not thinking it will be feet of snow, but a handful of inches looks likely for some areas by Sunday morning on the car, deck and driveway.

SNOWFALL FORECAST SATURDAY NIGHT

We’ll see very minor additional snowfall on Sunday during the day especially off the Finger Lakes for places like Ithaca and Cortland:

Let’s track the cold wind chills and then let you know when it will be “warming up” to near average cold temperatures for February:

It could become warm enough according to a couple of the long-range computer models for a little bit of rain on Wednesday, but for now we’re keeping the forecast as a wintry mix of snow, light mix and a few drops possible.

The warmest days of next week look like Wednesday and Saturday(Valentine’s Day) in the mid 30s.

Next weekend also marks the beginning of this year’s Syracuse Winterfest taking place in Downtown Syracuse.

Have a good rest of the weekend, respect the cold and be smart while outside.
