Cases can be made for each of the trio but the most persuasive is for HORS JEU, who is getting his act together over fences, and pulled a long way clear with the winner when narrowly denied at Hereford a fortnight ago. He can make amends at the expense of Star of Affinity, who ran up to the pick of his hurdles form at Wincanton in November and should have more to offer in this discipline.

A tight handicap. MADAJOVY showed improvement when second at Warwick on New Year’s Eve on handicap debut and looks open to further progress with this longer trip sure to suit. First-time cheekpieces are applied and he’s fancied to go one better for a top yard. Ami Bondhu is yet to fire this season, but the step up to three miles and the fitting of first-time cheekpieces may see him return to form, while Godot boasts two course wins and proved he retains all his ability when runner-up at Lingfield most recently.

TENNESSEE TANGO is a fairly useful bumper winner who has shaped with promise in three runs over hurdles and he can make the most of this drop in class. King of Records has been runner-up twice in maiden/novice company and merits consideration despite his yard going through a quiet spell, while Answer That warrants a market check on his hurdles debut for a new yard.

ICARE GRANDCHAMP stepped up on his second run after 13 months off when narrowly denied at Haydock three weeks ago and is clearly in the form to win a handicap at this level. Non Stop improved when winning over hurdles in December and returns to chasing having finished second in this race last year, while Alto Alto (won this previous 2 years) and Cobbler’s Boy likely have a better chance than recent form figures would suggest.

DIRTY DEN has proved consistent when wearing a hood over hurdles, proving at least as good as ever when again placed at Taunton last time, and he can gain a deserved success in a lesser race. Three-time course winner Inferno Sacree has finished runner-up in his last three handicap hurdles and looks threatening from this mark, while Our Papa Smurf is respected stepping up in trip, having won at this course a fortnight ago when fitted with cheekpieces.

LITTLE WREN proved herself much better over fences than hurdles when making a winning chasing debut at Fakenham three weeks ago, having most of her rivals in trouble from a long way out under an attacking ride. She can defy a 7 lb rise now moving up in trip, which is sure to suit, with further improvement on the cards. Minella Kaiser is lightly raced over fences and is also open to further progress.

PENN AVENUE won a handicap on the Flat in September and making her handicap bow over hurdles, she looks the one to beat in receipt of a handy four-year-old allowance for a yard that is amongst the winners. Golden Path has been off the track since October 2024 but her mark could be generous so she needs a market check, while Kill The Groove improved when runner-up at this course and distance a fortnight ago.
