Winter Olympics 2026; The secret behind Germany’s dominance in luge by numbers

7 in a row

Germany have been the best performing nation at every single Winter Olympics bar one, when Italy took home two golds at Lillehammer 1994.

Since then, Germany have therefore been the dominant luge nation for seven Olympics in a row ahead of their bid to make it eight in Italy.

135

Germany are just as dominant at the FIL World Luge Championships, where they have won 135 golds from a possible 208 – in keeping with their record of winning roughly two out of three races.

Austria are the closest to their neighbours with 32 golds, while Italy have won 17.

All 20

When looking at the all-time medallists at the FIL World Luge Championships, both the top 10 of the men’s and women’s standings are all German.

Loch is the most decorated luger at the worlds, with a record 14 goals, while 22 medals overall in a feat matched only by Arlt, Wendl, and Georg Hackl.

Geisenberger leads the women’s standings with nine golds and 16 medals overall, although the current generation are catching up.

Julia Taubitz, 29, is just one gold behind and is the reigning singles world champion ahead of her bid for a first Olympic medal at Milano Cortina 2026.

Jessica Degenhardt, 23, and 25-year-old Cheyenne Rosenthal have already have four world golds each. The pair are out to make history at Milano Cortina 2026 as the women’s doubles makes its Olympic debut.

38 + 135 + 113 = ?

Add 113 gold medals from the European Championships and across that event, the Olympics and the worlds, Germany have won a mighty 286 gold medals in luge.

They will hope to edge closer to the 300-mark at Milano Cortina 2026…
