The demolition of a historic former Nuneaton town centre pub has reached a milestone. It was back on Monday, January 13 when passers-by clocked that outbuildings at the back of the old pub were being pulled down.

Now, almost a month on, the actual pub itself is being demolished. It has been wrapped in scaffolding but it can be seen that the roof has disappeared.

With this is the old chimneys which stood aloft the roof and were part of the skyline in the Upper Abbey Street area for decades. Part of the wall, where a ‘ghost sign’ emerged of its past as the ‘Coach and Horses’, has also been removed.

Workmen remain on site today (February 10) as more of the heart of the building is taken down. The pub was a thriving part of the ‘Abbey Run’ but, much earlier than this, it served punters from the early 1800s as it was a coaching inn.

While the history of the pub, which had stood empty for decades and was the subject of a police warning, is well versed, the future of the site remains unclear.

While planning permission for the demolition was approved, in the documents at the time it was not specified what, if anything, is set to be built on the land. What is known is that there was mounting pressure for action to be taken at the building.

If something new was planned to be built on the site, once the old pub has been completely reduced to rubble, new planning permission would have to be obtained.
